The purpose of Module Four (My Goals) is for the young person to:
- Learn to visualise and identify their goals
- Learn to break down their goals into smaller steps
- Plan to work towards their goals
Visualising and identifying goals
If the young person is struggling to identify goals, remind them to reflect on their values, i.e., what really matters to them, and their strengths. Encourage them to remember that goals are small and specific actions, they don’t have to be big! The goal sorting task in this module may help, it includes a list of example goals to stimulate ideas.
Breaking down goals
If young people struggle to break down goals, you can try out a website that shows them how (see Module Resources below). If the young person finds it overwhelming to see lots of steps, encourage them to write out (or draw) only the first step and just concentrate on that one until they feel they have completed it. Then they can focus on the next individual step and repeat this process, focusing on just one step at a time.
Goal-setting – break it into manageable chunks, otherwise it can be overwhelming. Giving them SMART and achievable targets, check back in and acknowledge that,- not just skim over it. Like, ”Brilliant! You’ve done your first action. That’s great. Let’s put some other stepping-stones in place”. It gives them that achievement.
Planning goal-relevant activities
Goal-relevant activities do not need to be big or time-consuming, especially to begin with. It’s important to start with something that feels manageable as this will really help to build motivation and confidence. Emphasise to the young person that working towards goals really is about the power of small actions taken every day. Alternatively, it may be that the young person has naturally been doing goal-relevant activities in previous modules. If so, support them to think about how they might build upon these, e.g., doing more of them and/or doing more challenging versions.
